In Paganism and Wicca the egg represents Spring, it is a symbol of new life and rebirth. It is also a sign of fertility. It is said that if you give a gift of an egg to someone on Ostara (the Spring Equinox) the rest of the year will be filled with luck. The egg and the rabbit are both symbols of the Goddess Eostre who we honor on the Spring festival of Ostara.

Many Wiccans decorate their home and their altars with painted eggs, not only do they look pretty but it is a custom that goes back thousands of years, said to have started in ancient Persia in 580-529 b.c.e.
